What is IVF?
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilisation, where “In Vitro” means “outside the body”. It is essentially the process of creating a baby outside the body!
Who needs IVF?
For some conditions, IVF is the only solution. Consult with your doctor or an IVF Specialist to decide if IVF is needed for you. You can always call 80 80 943 943 to chat with our counsellors and book an in person or video appointment with our doctors.
How does IVF work?
1. Controlled Ovarian Stimulation
This process starts from the 2nd day of menses, and 10-12 days of stimulation injections are given to the wife. The objective of these, is to be able to retrieve as many eggs as we can. In a natural period (without stimulation injections), a single egg grows and ruptures. In IVF, we grow as many eggs as we can (usually between 4-30) in order to increase our chances of conception.
2. Ovum Pick Up
Once the ovum (eggs) have grown to a suitable size following stimulation, we remove them outside the body. This process is called an Ovum Pick Up. Here, we retrieve all the eggs that grew from the stimulation injections.
This is a short OT procedure that takes 20-30 mins and is done under short General Anaesthesia. It is a day care procedure where the patient is monitored for a few hours after their procedure and discharged on the same day.
3. Sperm Preparation
On the same day of the Ovum Pick Up, the husband gives his semen sample. In Sperm Preparation, we extract the best quality sperms.
4. In Vitro Fertilisation
Now that we have the egg and the sperm in the lab with us, we fertilise each egg with a sperm to create an embryo. We grow the embryos for 5 days in the lab.
As an example, if we retrieved 10 eggs in Pick Up, we fertilise all 10 eggs to create 10 embryos. We then grow these 10 embryos in the lab for 5 days. Not all embryos grow for the full 5 days. We see that only 30-50% of the embryos grow to day 5. This is a process of selection where the fittest and the strongest embryo grows, while weaker embryos stop growing at an earlier stage.
5. Embryo Transfer
We transfer up to 2 of the best embryos back into the uterus
